TV Guide’s June 30th issue, out in stands June 24th, have the 10 TV Stars that shared their secrets for having the best bods in the business. Well, let’s see if we can learn from a couple of them :
Mario Lopez (host of America’s Best Dance Crew and Extra’s weekend edition co-host) tells TV Guide, “I never feel awake unless I’m sweating.” A self-described “fat baby” turned “hyper kid,” Lopez, 34, exercises for a minimum of one hour a day. And while his ideal woman is as health-conscious as he is, this single stud doesn’t want to date a stick: “I like healthy, curvy women,” he says. “Women who look like women, not girls.”
Audrina Patridge (The Hills) is a fat-burning machine. Back in high school, doctors told her to guzzle milk to slow her metabolism. These days, the 23-year-old prefers Latin food and In-N-Out burgers, but watches her portions. “I order what I want when I’m out, but I don’t eat all of it,” she tells TV Guide. To maintain her bikini-ready body, Patridge works up a sweat five hours a week, doing laps in her backyard pool, hiking in Runyon Canyon or boogying in dance class. Even at home, she’s no couch potato: “When I’m sitting in front of the TV, I lift 5-pound weights or do squats,” she says. “And I wear heels when I vacuum because it works my calves and my butt.”
For more celeb fitness secrets buy the new issue of TV Guide. You never know, it might motivate you to do something for the summer. I know I need motivation myself. :)

Whenever I pass by a Crunch gym everyone seems to be already fabulous and having a great time. Maybe it’s because this sounds like the best gym EVER. Every Tuesday this summer you can stop in to any of their locations from 6-9pm and work out to live music and DJs. OR you can just mingle and see what the gym is all about and scope out some hotties. You can even take a group class…for free. It says open for “any and all to workout”, which I take to mean free pass yo! I guess you would have to actually go in to see what the catch is. It sound like an awesome way to meet new people and do something besides scarfing down food and/or alcohol after work. If I was single I would so be there. That and midnight yoga that they have here. Sounds sexy and fun. But I am not single and my happy hour consists of making dinners that can be produced during the course of one episode of Dora (that evil cow).
Has anyone checked this out yet? I’d really like to hear about it. If you sign up online you can get a one day guest pass for free so it might be worth it to see what the fuss is all about.

My obsession with the fabric Climalite continues. . . I adore it and it wicks sweat just amazingly. But there’s more: these new Adidas trousers are perfectly shapely and suited perfectly for activities like yoga and pilates. If you’re doing anything low-impact or involving stretches, these are the exercise pants for you. Some more hot features:
Rollover waistband with a drawstring
Bronze details at hip and at drawstring
Poly/elastane blend
Do you like any “miracle fabrics”? What are they?
Check them out.

Here in my neck of the woods there is an endless supply of neighborhood cookouts, outdoors festivals and the like. While they are a lot of fun and a great way to meet new friends, it’s very easy to get off track. You start out the day hoping to score some homemade crafts and hear live music and the next thing you know you’ve eaten your way through a bag of kettle corn and are passed out in a beer tent. Here are some helpful tips on how to enjoy yourself but not overdo it.
- Pre-Game. No not on booze like you did in college. I mean eat a big healthy meal before you ever leave the house so you aren’t so ravenous you’re ready to kill small children to get some funnel cake. A power breakfast will give you the energy to get through the day and will take the edge off so you can make healthier choices.
- Hydrate. Make sure you have had some water before you get to your destination and keep the liquids coming throughout the day. Salty foods, maybe some alcoholic beverages, they all add up. Take a chug of water when you are starting to feel like snacking and see if that helps.
- BYOS (bring your own snacks). If your only options cost 12 tickets for a choice of fried goodies that doesn’t leave you with many options. Make sure to bring along your own healthy snacks, like fruit and nuts, that travel well. This way you will spend less money and you won’t feel like you have to eat crap.
- Share.Provided you are close enough to the other person to do so, why not split a serving. You won’t feel deprived but you also can cut some calories.
- Cheat. If you want to indulge go ahead and do it. When I feel like I’m being deprived of something it just makes me mad and then I end up eating way too much of it out of defiance. Plan to sample one or two treats and enjoy them. Everything in moderation as they say.
Above all make sure you have a great time and wear sunblock!

Okay, I’ll admit it: I’m in a bit of a slump, but nothing major. Here’s the story: I just switched from NY to VT on my way to Miami. Putting my stuff in storage was a mess, I have animals that freak out when we do anything different, and I have a very tight schedule. So when I moved back, I ran into a tight spot: I have no gym to speak of, and while I had thought that the woods would be a great place to exercise, I sort of forgot what it’s like to crash through the woods: not so nice. Paired with a ridiculous amount of rain, I’m just a little bit scared right now.
With the outdoor workout not going too well, I’m switching over to the gym again. I feel like I failed a tad with all my summer exercise plans, but the gym is better than nothing. I guess I’m not an outdoors girl like I thought I was. . . Sigh.
What’s your top “motivation tip”? I need it to get going! What inspires you, what keeps you going, and– most importantly– what is a good way to help someone who needs an e-boost?!

Michael Dow released a book this May called The Pen and Paper Diet. It promises to help you lose weight by eating all you want. Really? How? Well let’s find out what comes with book from the website:
- A discussion to show you the common sense and logic that this diet is based upon (people with educational backgrounds ranging from a high school dropout (non-GED) to an MD have understood and grasped the concepts in this book).
- A personal example of how to keep track of your calorie consumption.
- A discussion on the stages that you will progress through by using this diet.
- Worksheets/Tables that will help you find your estimated calorie requirement based on scientific research. [The basic edition (US$14.95) has worksheets that require you to add or subtract twice and multiply once to determine your estimated calorie requirement. The Expanded edition (US$39.95) was intended for health professionals and has the math already performed. It lists estimated calorie requirements for individuals from age 19 to 84 and is over 450 pages.]
- An appendix that lists the calorie info for the majority of foods and drinks you should come into contact with to assist you in tracking calories.***contains calorie information for pork products***
Sounds interesting huh? Basically, it’s a management book which is pretty much tracking down what you eat. Educating yourself of the daily calories intake and hopefully adding much needed exercise. The latter needs to be part of any “diet” IMO.
Buy The Pen and Paper Diet at Lulu store for $14.95 if you’re interested.

As I mentioned here, I needed a jogging stroller. Needed it.
Once upon a time, I was free. I could roam wherever I wanted to go whenever I wanted to do it. I could run to the hills and back. I could run to the corner store.
But now things are different. I have been saddled blessed with a child.
As I mentioned, all those days ago, I had narrowed down my options to a Bob Ironman or a Mountain Buggy Terrain. Once I had limited my options, I then checked my bank account. A quick trip to Craigslist later and I found the perfect stroller.
A cheap one.
We scored a used InStep 10K Ultimate.

It was missing a rather vital joint on one side that caused the whole thing to lean like a drunken sorority girl, but the hubby fixed that with a trip to the hardware store and the purchase of some parts for a whole 16 cents.
We broke down all of the cloth parts and threw them in the wash, and voila! Instant fitness.
The fixed wheel is a bit of a pain for regular walking, but the performance isn’t bad considering the price tag.
Now, once again, I am free to roam.
Until it’s time for a diaper change, anyway.

Image details: Karolina kurkova served by picapp.com
So there’s this “situation” with Victoria’s Secret model Karolina Kurkova that I’d looove for you to chime in on– ’cause it makes me so uncomfortable! At Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil, Karolina took to the runway in a tiny, tiny Brazilian-cut thong and halter top swimsuit. . . and the press went mad down there because of her “cellulite” on her back and behind! Since it is summertime here and I’ve been digging out all my swimsuits, this news really caught my eye.
I know that you’ve got to be in shape to be a swimsuit model (no matter what your size), the press that she is receiving is really intriguing me. Is her appearance that shocking, or is it sensationalism?
Check out the pictures here, and then tell me, what do you think? Confidence, in my mind, is what really matters, and she’s definitely not missing any of that!

Since the weather is so nice right now, I keep trying to come up with things that we can do outside that also involve some type of physical activity. Recently the family and I went to a resort hotel place and they offered rentals for lots of fun stuff like mountain boards and recumbent bicycles. I was able to try the recumbent bike for about and hour and OMG, I am in love. At first it was really difficult for me to grasp because you steer with your back and hips and I kept trying to sit up to go in the direction I wanted to go. You would think I was more coordinated than that but no. If these things weren’t so gosh darn expensive I would get one in a second.
It was such a great workout for my abs, shoulders and legs. I could totally see myself taking a long ride on a weekend along the lakefront. Ahh, if only. Technically I believe what I rode is called a recumbent trike because it had three wheels instead of two. Just looking around it would run me about 2-3 grand. I’m sorry but that is WAY out of my price range for recreational equipment. I think a good in between would be a recumbent exercise bike. I’ve used them in the past and while definitely a workout, it has never worked my abs the way the trike did. Additionally just getting out in the world makes it a lot more interesting and makes the time pass more quickly. Has anyone tried a recumbent bike or trike before? I soooo want one, so please tell me if you have one and how you like it.

I always get confused about food: what’s good, what’s bad, and what’s now considered good and what’s considered bad! Wow. I am in love with the idea that some of my “off limits” foods are now back in the game. . . so I bring to you MSNBC’s top seven healthy foods:
1. Eggs: Thirteen essential nutrients, baby! Talk about a good food. . . and they have around 75 calories. I’m so glad to see these back in the game.
2. Oysters: These were considered bad for you? Where was I? They have awesome omega-three levels and are a great source of zinc as well. Get them fresh, frozen, or canned.
3. Pizza: Not your usual take-away pizza, but one that has a whole-wheat crust, organic tomato sauce, real mozzarella and lots of fresh veg toppings.
4. Canned fruits and veggies: Canned beans, when processed, may have a more soluble form of fiber than dry beans, and canned tomatoes contain more nutrients than fresh or frozen. Since canned veggies and fruits are processed at their peak, you get a lot more than you’d expect.
5. Beef: Get it lean, and serve small portions to maximize its health potential.
6. White potatoes: Potatoes have high fiber plus tons of Vitamin C (25% of your DV), plus copper, B6, selenium, and more.
7. Sugary cereals: Yes, sugary! They are pumped with vitamins, and if served with fresh fruit and milk, they’re actually pretty good for you.
Doesn’t that change your perspective? I’m especially excited about the canned veggies thing, since fresh vegetables can be pretty expensive and sometimes hard to find.
